Fence contractors in Schaumburg must hold a Schaumburg Contractor's Business License before the village issues a fence permit. A Fence Permit Application is needed when installing any type of fence, and the code requires a permit from the director of community development for any fence higher than two feet. Schaumburg has about 76,868 residents, and 40 fence contractors serve the village. Several work from Schaumburg itself, and the rest come from Palatine, Mt Prospect, Elk Grove Village, Wheeling, Elgin and Hoffman Estates.
The village code shapes what gets built. Perimeter fences in a side or rear yard, behind the front of the house, must be open or semi-open and no taller than 5 feet. Privacy fences up to 6 feet are allowed only around patios or decks, extending up to 16 feet into the rear yard from the back of the house, and they must be wood, masonry or a comparable material. Chain link fences with slats are prohibited. The permit rules are laid out at /permits/schaumburg/.
A 6-foot solid or semi-open fence is allowed only along lot lines next to parks, recreation areas, schools, multifamily, manufacturing, business or office property, or a parking lot. For homes on named arterial roads, it is allowed only on the side that abuts the road. No fence may be built in a front yard beyond the front of the building, and on corner lots none may go beyond the required building setback line on either side. The finished side must face neighboring properties or the public right-of-way, and no fence may impede natural surface water drainage. Height is measured from grade to the top of a typical section, posts may rise up to 8 inches above the limit, and the grade may not be altered to gain height. Barbed wire and electric fences are prohibited in residential areas.
