Elgin requires a permit before fence work starts. The city handles it through a Quick Permit Application, and fences are on its list of common residential projects that need only that application. Fences in side and rear yards can be up to 6 feet tall. Any yard that touches a street counts as a front yard, so a corner lot gets the front yard limits on its street side. In street yards a solid fence can be 3 feet tall at most, and a picket-style fence can reach 4 feet if enough of it is open. Posts and supporting members must face the inside of the fence owner's lot, and the bottom of the fence can sit at most 6 inches off the ground, a gap that counts toward the height. This site has a page on Elgin's fence permit rules at /permits/elgin/.

Chain link needs a note of its own here, because Elgin does not allow it within the front building lines. Barbed wire is prohibited in the zoning code except where specifically authorized. Wood, vinyl, chain link and aluminum are the everyday work for the companies serving Elgin, and most of them take homes and commercial properties alike. Fence Connection, Inc. also installs wrought iron and composite, code-compliant pool fencing, and cantilever rolling and overhead gate systems in manual and automated forms.
