Fence Contractors in Palatine, IL

Fence contractors in Palatine work under a village permit rule. A building permit is required to install a fence, and the zoning code makes it unlawful to build, erect or replace one on private property or a parkway without it. Palatine has about 66,293 residents, and 40 fence contractors serve the village. Diamond Fence Corp. and Fence Builders Inc. are among those that work out of Palatine itself. Most of the others are based in the towns around it, such as Lake Zurich, Mt Prospect, Wauconda, Barrington and Wood Dale.

The height and placement rules are specific. Residential fences may not exceed 6 feet, or 8 feet in rear or interior side yards that border Business or Manufacturing districts. In front yards, and in side yards that abut a street which abuts a front yard, only decorative fencing is allowed, up to 3 feet tall and 20 linear feet in total. Anything more in a front yard needs a special use approved by the Village Council. Barbed wire and electrically charged fences are not permitted. The permit rules are laid out at /permits/palatine/.

The village handout adds a few build details. The finished side of the fence must face out, support posts can be no more than 8 feet apart, and chain link must be at least 11.5-gauge woven wire. A non-decorative fence on a side yard that abuts a street must sit at least 5 feet from the lot line. An old non-conforming fence may be replaced in its current location if the new one is no taller and similar or more open in style, once the owner proves the old fence's location, height and style. A permit is still required for that replacement.
